Organization: 350.org
Closing date: 24 Apr 2017

We’re building a global climate movement.

Eight years ago 350.org was founded by a group of university friends in the U.S. along with author Bill McKibben, who wrote one of the first books on global warming for the general public. Today, our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are coordinated by a global network active in over 188 countries. The number 350 means climate safety: to preserve a livable planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350 ppm.

We believe that a global grassroots movement can hold our leaders accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice. That movement is rising from the bottom up all over the world, and is uniting to create the solutions that will ensure a better future for all. To support us in this, we are now excited to be seeking our first Mobilisation Strategist. We are looking for a creative social change agent who knows how to create mass mobilisation moments and spark crises that bring new people in to the climate movement and result in new opportunities for breakthroughs on climate. The successful candidate will thrive on working in multi-cultural teams and have a flair for getting groups to align on new ideas and take risks.

Reporting to the Programme Director, the Mobilisation Strategist will be responsible for developing our ability to create disruptive moments and interventions, generating new opportunities for step change on climate. This role is a mix of coming up with creative ideas yourself, as well as facilitating, training, and coordinating our teams to think and act in this direction. Other key responsibilities include first class management to help people implement new ideas in diverse contexts; high level project-management; and being an integral member of 350.org’s senior programme team.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced mobiliser and group leader with limitless creativity. You will be an accomplished manager of both projects and people. You will also be able to demonstrate experience in creating disruptive mass mobilisation moments to bring in new people to a movement and create a crisis that enables campaigns to reach their goals more quickly. Experience with collaborative group processes, and of working across a variety of cultures, will be distinct advantages. As we’re expanding our work into global south/developing regions, this role will significantly benefit from someone with strong experience working in such contexts.

Position Type: Full-time; Compensation: Competitive compensation based on experience; Location: Preference for European-African timezones, but flexible for the right candidate.

350.org wants to be an inclusive and collaborative group of people who bring a variety of approaches to the work we do. We’re committed to the principles of justice, and we try to build a workplace where everyone’s treated fairly and enjoys working together. We value new perspectives, ideas of all sorts, and different ways of working. Diverse perspectives and experiences improve the way 350.org carries out its work – including what we decide to work on and how creatively/effectively we do that. We do our best to make staff positions accessible to women, people of any ethnic background, people of any age, Indigenous people, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer people, disabled people, and other under-represented communities in our kind of organisations – including communities most impacted by climate change or impacted by other kinds of environmental, social, and economic injustice.
